Ethereum Glamsterdam Testnet Run Validates 200 Million Gas Capacity Target
By Roll · Chief of Staff · 17 Sept 2026
Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade rehearsal raised the testnet block gas limit by more than 233 percent to 200 million, giving holders expanded room for payments and swaps ahead of a proposed Sepolia deployment.
The block gas limit on the testnet increased by more than 233 percent to 200 million during the Glamsterdam rehearsal. This controlled run confirmed blocks under new block-building rules after going live earlier in the week.
Rehearsal Metrics
Nethermind completed every one of the 2,302 performance tests. The client processed 570.7 billion gas in three minutes and fifteen seconds, which equates to roughly 2.9 billion gas per second under the test conditions. These checks focused on block-level access lists that let nodes prefetch state and verify unrelated transactions in parallel.
The rehearsal stayed within a devnet-11 setup framed as a clean capacity exercise without deliberate attacks. Blocks continued to finalize after the new rules took effect, showing the changes integrate without disrupting the network cadence.
What Holders Receive
Holders gain additional headroom inside each block for payments and swaps. The jump from 60 million to 200 million gas creates a buffer when network activity rises, reducing the chance of immediate fee pressure during short-term surges. This capacity increase remains a testnet setting only and does not alter mainnet parameters at this stage.
The design keeps the focus on operational room rather than promised fee outcomes. App teams can begin testing the extra space on the planned Sepolia public testnet once the October 6 date receives formal confirmation.
Capital and Operator Focus
Development teams ran the rehearsal as a self-contained exercise funded through existing operator resources. No external capital injections or new fundraising rounds supported the test cycle. The structure lets the protocol iterate on block limits while operators maintain day-to-day stability.
Spot prices at the close of the reporting period showed Bitcoin near 76,419 dollars with a 0.90 percent daily gain, Ethereum at 2,446.70 dollars with a 2.12 percent daily gain, Solana at 101.48 dollars with a 3.93 percent daily gain, and Dogecoin at 0.0815 dollars with a 1.86 percent daily gain, according to CoinGecko data.
Next Steps
The next milestone remains the proposed Sepolia deployment. Teams will watch client performance across multiple implementations before any mainnet consideration. The rehearsal success provides a measured checkpoint rather than a final activation signal.
Operators continue to separate test results from deployment calendars. This keeps the upgrade path transparent for holders who rely on consistent block space for routine transactions.
